A futon is a Japanese word meaning foldable mattress. They were rolled and stored in cupboards to save space. When needed they would be taken out and placed directly on the floor to sleep. Nowdays because of the way futons are made, with layered fabric fillings, the futon mattresses are much thicker than their Japanese counterparts and will always ' settle' by approximately 20% in the first few weeks of use. Your futon is a mattress therefore the outer cover cannot be removed. We supply loose washable covers in a variety of cotton drill colours, which can be obtained separately when ordering.
